MGB VI conducted a lecture on geologic hazards at the OCD VI DRRM training for public sector

Iloilo City – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office VI (MGB VI) gave a lecture on Flood, Rain-induced Landslide and other Geological Hazards on July 26, 2023 during the three-day Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Training for Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U).  Ms. Catherine Tapalla, senior geologist at MGB VI was the resource person for the topic.  MGB VI responded to the invitation of the Office of the Civil Defense Region VI (OCD VI) who organized Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Training as a crucial initiative aimed at fostering a culture of resilience and proactive disaster management within the public sector.

Ms. Tapalla delved into the various types of geological hazards that pose potential risks to communities such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis; identifying vulnerable areas and assessing risk levels based on geological conditions and historical data; and implementing effective early warning systems and structural and non-structural mitigating measures for landslides and other preparatory measures before the onset of typhoons that bring these hazards.

“Our team at MGB VI is dedicated to promoting sustainable disaster risk reduction strategies by empowering individuals and organizations with the necessary tools and knowledge,” said Tapalla. “We believe that by enhancing the understanding of geologic hazards among public sector professionals, we can collectively work towards building more resilient and safer communities.”

The lecture was interactive, allowing participants from the ISAT-University personnel to engage in discussions and gain practical insights from real-world examples.  (MGB VI)
