MGB VI presents rain-induced landslides and Karst subsidence at the OCD VI DRRM training

Iloilo City – Ms. Mae Magarzo, chief geologist and head of the Geosciences Division of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau VI, talks about rain-induced landslides and Karst subsidence during the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Blended Training, Batch 1 on March 16, 2022.

Organized by the Office of the Civil Defense 6 (OCD 6), Capacity Building and Training Section, the DRRM training is intended for public utilities service providers in Region 6.  According to the OCD 6 training team, around forty electric cooperatives, water districts and internet service providers from the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental and Bacolod City joined the training via Zoom.  The second batch of participants will be public utilities service providers from Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Iloilo City on March 30, 2022.

According to the OCD VI, “RA 10121 calls for the need to capacitate all stakeholders of society in DRRM and ultimately achieve the NDRRMC’s vision of safe, adaptive, and disaster-resilient communities towards sustainable development.”  Meanwhile, MGB VI, DENR as member agencies of the National and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council continuously helps the DND-OCD, other national government agencies and the local government in understanding more about geologic hazards such as rain-induced landslides, flood and Karst subsidence as part of the agency’s geological risk reduction and resiliency program.

Ms. Mae Magarzo added, MGB has completed both the rapid and detailed geohazard mapping of the country in 2014.  It has widely disseminated and distributed the geohazard maps to the local government units and different government agencies, in close coordination with the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils.
