Landslides in Barangay Cunsad, Alimodian triggered by Gener, residents advised to relocate

Picture1(Iloilo City) – After a day of rain due to tropical storm Gener enhanced by the southwest monsoon, portions of the main road linking Barangay Cunsad to all the other 17 upland barangays of Alimodian collapsed in the morning of July 31 making it impassable.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau DENR, Region 6 (MGB-6) investigated the reported landslide on August 1, 2012.

Dr. Leilanie O. Suerte, Geologist of MGB-6 said that the landslide affected 30 hectares more or less in Barangay Cunsad. The road traversing Sitio Pan-itan was the head or the upper portion of the landslide, the slide moving downslope towards the lower portion in Sitio Bugsukan, bringing debris of sandstone, mudstone, siltstone, shale, plant and other concrete materials that chipped off from the road.

These barangays are sources of vegetables and fruits of the Province of Iloilo. According to Punong Barangay Joven Andiano, 24 houses were situated in the area affected by the landslide. “Thankfully, the people immediately evacuated at the first signs of an impending landslide, and no one died or got hurt,” Andiano said.

MGB-6 Regional Director Leo Van V. Juguan advised that based on the team’s findings, the affected houses need to be relocated. MGB-6 further reiterates that the information on geohazards furnished to the LGUs has to be taken into consideration for an effective local disaster risk reduction management system. (MGB-6)
