Iloilo City – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office No. 6, DENR gave a lecture on the topic “Understanding Geohazards, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, and Semi-Precious Stones (Gemstones) in Western Visayas” for the DENR Regional Office 6 personnel today as part of the celebration of the Environment Month. The informative lecture was held at the Activity Center of the DENR Regional Office 6.
Geologist Adrian Nichol Lizada of the Geosciences Division of MGB, DENR RO-6 shared his knowledge and expertise on geologic hazards, particularly landslides and floods, why they occur and how they affect us. He also explained a very important program of the MGB, DENR, the Vulnerability and Risk Assessment. He said that through the VRA, the degree of vulnerability and potential risks of an area can be assessed and characterized depending on the exposure of three elements – population, built-up areas and roads – to rain-induced landslides and floods.
The resource person gave as well a presentation on the characteristics of semi-precious stones or gemstones which can be found in the municipalities of San Joaquin, Iloilo and Sibalom and San Remigio, Antique. Their potential for economic value was also explored. (MGB, DENR RO-6)
