Learning about geologic hazards in the informative briefing for the Province of Aklan

Iloilo City – The DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office 6 (MGB RO 6) and the Provincial Government of Aklan conducted an informative briefing of geologic hazards on September 8-9, 2016 at the provincial capitol in Kalibo, Aklan.  The briefing was delivered for various stakeholders of the province in three batches namely  the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, heads of provincial government offices, municipal mayors and officers of 17 municipalities, national line agencies, civil society organizations, media and the academe.

The Aklan Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) spearheaded the activity and resource persons from the DENR-MGB RO 6 provided the informative input.  Dr. Leilanie O. Suerte, Supervising Geologist of the DENR-MGB RO 6 discussed about geologic hazards and presented the results of the geohazard assessment and mapping conducted by the DENR-MGB RO 6 in the province.  Dr. Suerte explained the nature, factors, triggering mechanisms and risks of geologic hazards focusing on rain-induced landslides, flood and karst subsidence due to sinkholes.

The Provincial Planning and Development Office said in the overview that the activity is part of the provincial government’s efforts to adopt and use in their planning activities the guidelines on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in sub-national development and physical or land use planning as embodied in government policies, specifically Administrative Order No. 1 series of 2010.  The policy acknowledges local plans prepared by the LGUs as a potent tool to effectively carry out disaster mitigation measures.

Regional Director Leo Van V. Juguan said that the local government units (LGUs) are the primary stakeholders of the DENR-MGB’s geohazard mapping and assessment as the technical information on geohazards are prerequisites in mainstreaming climate change adaption and mitigation measures in the local plans of LGUs.
