Iloilo City – The Environment Month celebration starts today all over the country. In Region 6, the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources offers a Eucharistic Celebration for the environment with Fr. Renato Cuadras as the officiating priest in the morning of June 1 at the DENR Regional Office 6 compound. Employees and officials of the DENR Region-6 and its line bureaus, the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) regional offices attended the mass and witnessed the ceremonies that formally opened the celebration.
DENR Regional Office-6 officials namely Assistant Regional Director (ARD) for Management Services Livino B. Duran, ARD for Technical Services Jesse L. Vego and Chief of the Surveys and Mapping Division Engr. Mamerto D. Caballero, with the Regional Director of MGB Regional Office 6 Engr. Leo Van V. Juguan and Regional Director for EMB Region 6 Atty. Jonathan C. Bulos led the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This year’s celebration theme “Go Wild for Life, Combat Biodiversity Loss” calls for an increased awareness and on the importance of protecting our wildlife and preserving biodiversity in caring for the environment which is the source of life.
In his homily, Fr. Cuadras urged the DENR employees to care for the spiritual and moral environment “in each one of us” before we could even start discussing how we could protect and preserve the natural environment.
DENR Region 6 activities for the month-long celebration include photo exhibit, radio program, school and community advocacies, project launching and regional tree planting.
RD Juguan said that MGB RO-6 will conduct school lectures and a press conference focusing on geohazard and sharing of knowledge on how to maximize the usefulness of the geohazard maps for rain-induced landslides and floods. He added that this information is very useful especially that the rainy season has started. (DENR, MGB RO-6)
