MGB, DENR RO-6 dialogues with the SBs and SPs on mining laws and regulations and geohazard maps

Iloilo City – The DENR, Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office 6 (DENR, MGB RO-6) holds dialogues with the local government units in the region on the highlights of the mining law and regulations.

The DENR MGB RO-6 have been conducting a series of information, education and communication (IEC) engagements over the years with 46 sangguniang bayan or panlungsod in Nabas, Malinao, Banga, Buruanga, Lezo, Kalibo, Malay and Numancia in the province of Aklan; San Remigio, Laua-an, Patnongon, Valderrama, Barbaza, Libertad, Sibalom and San Jose, Antique; Cuartero, Jamindan, Mambuasao, and Roxas City, Capiz; Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, Jordan and San Lorenzo, Guimaras; in Iloilo City, Leon, Igbaras, San Joaquin, Miagao, Lambunao, San Dionisio, Barotac Viejo, Passi City, Dumangas, and Oton, Iloilo; and San Carlos City, Pontevedra, Cauayan, Kabankalan City, Hinobaan, Sagay City, Sipalay City, Victorias City, Hinigaran, and Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.  It has also presented to the six Sangguniang Panlalawigan in Region 6.

Regional Director Leo Van V. Juguan of MGB RO-6 said that this IEC activity is intended to increase the awareness and understanding of mining laws and policies among the local government and how to strictly enforce them to better manage our mineral lands and resources.

Recently, the MGB RO-6 IEC team presented to the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Sigma, Capiz on April 23, 2018.  Atty. Cesar Emmanuelle P. Buyco, Jr., legal officer of DENR, MGB RO6 discussed the highlights of the mining law (RA 7942) and current regulations concerning the management of mineral lands and resources.  Atty. Buyco said that it is very important that the local government units are fully aware of the laws and regulations on mining considering that the local government plays a vital role in implementing them.  There are mining permits that are being issued by the local government such as quarry and sand and gravel permits below five hectares.  The local government must also be aware of the taxes and fees from mining permits and fees that must accrue to them as provided by the law.

DENR, MGB RO 6 geologists headed by the chief of the Geosciences division Mae Y. Magarzo educates further about geologic hazards and presents the geohazard maps of the municipalities and how they could use them in their local planning.  (MGB RO-6)
