MGB, DENR holds 2017 Annual Technical Forum in Iloilo City

Iloilo City – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) holds its 2017 Annual Technical Forum in MO2 Westown Hotel, Iloilo City on November 8-10, 2017.  Regional Director of the DENR-MGB Regional Office 6 Leo Van V. Juguan, CESO V said it is the first time for MGB RO 6 to host this national event of the MGB which is being attended by its fifteen regional offices nationwide.

With the theme “MGB: Adapting, Sustaining and Improving Towards Responsible Mineral Resources and Geosciences Development,” is an annual gathering of the personnel to present technical and policy papers which are “the products of research and development studies/projects, geological investigations on geohazards, vulnerability risk assessments, geochemical surveys, stakeholders’ engagement and consultations conducted during the preceding year.”

In his keynote speech, Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano, Acting Director of the DENR-MGB encouraged the participants “to reflect on what can be done to contribute in formulating new programs, bridging policy gaps, and pursuing long-term and sustainable policies so we to better improve the management of our natural resources.”

Atty. Arturo C. Cangrejo, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) of the province of Iloilo delivered the welcome message of Iloilo Governor Arthur D. Defensor, Sr.

There were nine policy papers, 21 technical papers and 20 posters were presented during the forum which competed for the Best Policy Paper, Best Technical Paper, Best Poster and Best Presenter awards.  The judges were experts in the fields of mining, exploration, geology, metallurgy, and policy, and some were members of the Board of Examiners of the Professional Regulation Commission.  They were Atty. Jasper Alberto H. Lascano, Engr.  Manuel A. Banaag, Engr. Enrico C. Nera, Ms. Redempta B. Baluda and Mr. Joel D. Muyco.

The policy paper entitled “Operationalizing Electronic MRF Account Management System: Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Managing Environment Funds in Mining Projects” by Engr. Johnny R. Matias of MGB RO 6 was awarded as the Best Policy Paper.  Jan Albert Macario B. Galang and Edwin M. Mojares, Ph.D of MGB MIMAROPA, authors of the technical paper entitled “Landslide Hazard Mapping of Marinduque Island Using Frequency Ratio Analysis Method” won the Best Technical Paper award.  Jan Albert Macario B. Galang won as Best Presenter as well.  The poster entitled “A GIS-Based Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment of Tuguegarao City and Adjoining Areas Using ArcGIS by Ms. Vanessa Andrea V. Llagas of the Lands Geological Survey Division MGB Central Office won as Best Poster.  (MGB6, DENR)
